Rest is not a rounding error. Teams on the second half of a back-to-back reliably post worse results — tired legs, tired goalies — so a schedule that hands Calgary and Vegas barely half the back-to-back load Pittsburgh carries is a real, if invisible, competitive edge. It's the kind of structural tilt our power rankings account for as the season plays out.

The shape of 84 games

Before asking who the schedule favors, it helps to see how uniform it is. Every team's 84 games break down the exact same way — no team gets a soft divisional draw or a light inter-conference load: 4 games against each of your 7 divisional rivals (28), 3 against each of the 8 other teams in your conference (24), and 2 against all 16 teams in the other conference (32). The headline feature of the 84-game format is right there in the last bucket: every team now plays every other team at least twice — home and away, so every building hosts every visitor at least once. Because the structure is identical for all 32 teams, the only schedule differences that matter are who those opponents are (strength of schedule) and when you catch them (rest).

Does the schedule play favorites?

Two extra games, unevenly distributed — so it's worth asking who the grid helps. We measured it two ways, and the answer isn't the one you'd guess.

Rest edge — who catches tired opponents. What matters isn't just how many back-to-backs you play, but how often you catch an opponent on the second half of one. Net that against your own back-to-backs and you get a rest edge:

Montreal comes out most favored — it faces a fatigued opponent 19 times while playing just 10 of its own back-to-backs. Toronto gets it from both ends: it catches a tired opponent only 5 times (fewest in the league) while grinding through 11 of its own. (Pittsburgh plays the most own back-to-backs, 15.)

Strength of schedule — and here's the surprise. Using each team's end-of-last-season Elo as an opponent-strength proxy, we ranked every team's average opponent. The spread is tiny: from Toronto's 1513.5 (hardest) to Edmonton's 1498.3 (easiest) — just 15 Elo points, about two percentage points of win probability per game. NHL schedules are remarkably balanced by opponent strength: the divisional structure forces everyone into a similar opponent pool, and a team's own quality barely predicts its slate (Carolina, the league's top team by Elo, draws only the 17th-hardest schedule).

There is one clean pattern, and it's a conference story. Because 52 of your 84 games (28 divisional + 24 in-conference) are played inside your own conference, a team largely inherits its conference's strength — and last season the East finished stronger. The result: the 14 toughest slates in the league all belong to Eastern teams, and the easiest all belong to the West. Here's the full ranking of average opponent Elo:

So the honest answer: the schedule's real tilt is rest, not strength. Opponent quality is nearly equalized — where teams gain or lose an edge is in the back-to-back lottery.

Year over year: the 84-game season actually eases the grind — league-wide back-to-backs fell from 430 to 377 and the per-team spread narrowed, because the season starts ~8 days earlier and runs a few days longer. One caveat: 2025-26 was compressed by the February Olympic break, which inflated its back-to-back count, so part of that drop is simply the return to a normal calendar.
